What great news. Island lad Danny Briggs has been selected to play for England’s Cricket team.
Twenty year old Danny, a spin bowler who plays for Hampshire and Ventnor, will be head off to Abu Dhabi and Dubai to play in the full England One Day International and Twenty20 International squads, taking on Pakistan.
First Islander to play for England
The Daily Echo says that he “would become the first cricketer from the Isle of Wight to play for England.”
Pride
Understandably the Hampshire team are proud, pointing out on the Rose Bowl Website that last winter, Danny “took more than 50 wickets on the England Performance Programme and Lions tours of Australia and the Caribbean”. He then went on to take a further 16 wickets during the “recently finished one-day series against Bangladesh ‘A’ and Sri Lanka ‘A’.”
Danny’s has been selected before for the the England Twenty20 squad, but didn’t get to play. Those in the know say that the pitches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai should be “spin-friendly conditions”, so ideal for him.
Thanks to proud relative Karen Le Brecht for getting in touch with VentnorBlog and letting us all know. Karen says on top of all of his cricketing skills, he’s “a lovely lad too”.
Good luck Danny!
