Thanks to VB reader, Bruce, for sending through details this morning of an earthquake that happened just off the south coast today.
According to the Guardian, just before 8am this morning (Thursday) residents in West Sussex felt the impact of 3.9 magnitude earthquake.
The British Geological Survey say the epicentre of the quake was just south of Portsmouth with a depth of 10km.
Largest in area since 1734
David Kerridge, from the British Geological Survey, said the earthquake was the largest in the area since a magnitude 4.5 quake in 1734, “Historically, there have been two other significant events nearby – a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in 1878 and a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in 1750. In the UK, we experience an earthquake of this magnitude approximately every two years,” he said.
