You may well have heard about a power cut in Newport last night. How it’s been described to you probably doesn’t convey what the video below shows.
Here’s how Graham Murphy described it to OnTheWight
About 10:40, the power supplied to local properties in Whitepit Lane in Newport suffered from a number of fluctuations, as the local substation started to develop a fault.
At approximately 11:10, the fault developed into something more major, with bangs and arcing that resulted in a small fire.
The fire brigade were called at about 11:15, as were Scottish and Southern Energy.
Power to local residents failed at about 11:20, shortly before the Fire Brigade arrived.
The Fire Brigade were able to put the fire quickly, using a CO2 fire extinguisher.
After ensuring the substation was safe to work on, SSE worked on fixing the substation, so that local residents had power fully restored by about 7:30 in the morning.
