East Wight residents to choose ‘People’s Champion’ via secure online vote

News shared by East Wight Primary, in their own words. Ed

East Wight Primary, the local tactical voting project, will hold a secure online vote between 16th and 19th June 2024 to determine who is the best tactical choice to beat the Conservatives in East Wight.

They say because of the lack of a clear tactical choice in East Wight means local people are being encouraged to contribute their views to the vote before the vote, so local people with local knowledge of the candidates and the Island can choose the best tactical bet, rather than distant algorithms.

June dates for voting
Between 16th and 19th June, people on the electoral roll in East Wight will be able to vote in a ranked choice poll, for who they believe to be the best candidate to beat the Conservatives.

Organiser Charity Garnett said,

“We hope local people who are determined to no longer be represented by the Conservatives will join this ground breaking local project.

“In the next few weeks, we will be publishing the answers to questions put to the Green, Labour and Liberal Democrats candidates from local people.

“There will be several hustings happening in East Wight and we will be encouraging our supporters to go and see the candidates in action before making their choice.

“These elections happen once every five years, this time let’s get together for the change we so desperately need, for our NHS, our young people and our environment.”

Inspired by South Devon Primary
Organisers were inspired by the South Devon Primary who held meetings in March where over 1,000 people voted for Caroline Voaden, Liberal Democrat, as the best tactical choice. She is widely expected to win in South Devon as a direct result of this local tactical voting project.

Of the remaining primaries being held in safe Conservative seats, the East Wight Primary is the only other one registered as a non-party campaign with access to the electoral roll.

The ‘People’s Champion’ for East Wight will be announced on 20th June.

O’Flynn: Making the system work for us
Organiser Mobes O’Flynn said,

“From the beginning, EWP has been about local people coming together to try to make our horrible electoral system work for us. We know we have to go beyond our usual tribal loyalties to get the best representation.

“This movement is totally people powered, come and get involved and help persuade your friends and young people of the importance of voting, and of voting tactically.”

Bound by Electoral Commission rules
The East Wight Primary is registered with the Electoral Commission as a non-party campaigner, and as such is bound by their rules and spending limits.

We remain confident that we can support East Wight to gain an MP that better represents our shared values, by getting our tactical vote organised.
