Education union calls for member votes on Government’s 5.5% teacher pay proposal

This month approximately 300,000 NEU members, who are serving teachers in state schools are being asked to take part in a snap poll on the recent Government offer of a 5.5% pay award to all teacher members.

The poll runs from 21st to 30th September 2024. The only question:

“Do you Accept or Reject the Government’s 5.5% pay offer?”  

Kebede: It’s their strike action in 2023 that won the argument for teacher pay to be addressed
Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, said,

 “NEU members should be in no doubt what has got us to this point. It is their strike action in 2023 that won the argument for teacher pay to be addressed. The situation left by the Conservative government was simply unsustainable. 

  “We recommend that members accept the 5.5% offer, which is a significant first – but not last – step toward a long-term correction in pay. The Government should be under no illusion that a single pay deal is an end to the matter.” 

Shreeve: Teachers asking themselves ‘Should I stay, or should I go?’
Peter Shreeve, Assistant District Secretary of the National Education Union, said,

“Locally, staff have enough to deal with. The demands of working in education has not got easier.

“Last year on the Isle of Wight, Education Health and Care plans (ECHP) increased to 6.5% of those in education.

“Overall special needs students, which have to be funded by schools directly increased to 16.5%. Budgets are still tight, with deficits in the high needs area.

“This month saw the start of the primary school reorganisation.

“Workload challenges will dramatically increase, whatever happens. A number of staff are certainly asking themselves: ‘Should I stay, or should I go?’

“The local NEU has met with staff from the six schools at risk. Despite at risk of losing their job, our members overwhelming concern: What will be the impact on their pupils?”
