Eleven flood alerts and an Amber weather warning issued as continuous heavy rain hits the Isle of Wight (update 5)

It will be no surprise to Islanders to see that the Met Office’s yellow weather warning transformed into an Amber weather warning overnight — running until 8am.

Not only that be eleven flood alerts were issued by the Environment Agency overnight. The following areas were issued flood alerts:

IR: Allow extra time if travelling by road
An Island Roads spokesman said,

“We are experiencing heavy rainfall across the network but particularly in the central and eastern parts of the Island.

“We are working hard to maintain a safe network but would appeal to motorists to take particular care driving in these conditions and to leave additional time for their journeys if they have to travel.”

Roads passable with care
Flood warning signs are out at the following locations meaning the road is currently considered passable with care to most vehicles:

  • Alverstone Road, Newchurch.
  • Binstead Road, Ryde.
  • Ashey Road, Ryde.
  • Rew Lane, Wroxall.
  • Blackwater Shute, Newport.
  • St George’s Way, Newport.

Island Roads are also clearing a fallen tree in Main Road Havenstreet.

Closed roads
There are road closures at:

  • Sylvan Drive/Foxes Road, Newport
  • Warlands Lane, Shalfleet,
  • Thorley Road, Yarmouth
  • Ryde Esplanade
  • The Strand, Ryde
  • Halberry Lane/Cross Lane, Newport

From 8am to 10am, there is still a yellow warning in place.
