Home educating families are invited to attend a series of free events providing a taster of the exciting educational visits and workshops available at a range of Isle of Wight museums.
Families will experience a range of ‘hands-on’ activities at our historic sites and we hope to gather feedback about how our museums and collections can assist in educating children at home.
Classic Boat Museum
On Tuesday, 17th October, families are invited to visit the Classic Boat Museum with workshops (pictured above) at the Boat Shed at Cowes and The Gallery at East Cowes.
There will be the chance to find out more about the Island’s maritime innovations over the past 150 years with guided tours and self-led trails as well as a Lego boat designing workshop.
Carisbrooke Castle Museum
Carisbrooke Castle Museum will open its doors for a workshop on Tuesday, 21st November.
There will be the opportunity to explore the museum and discover more than 1,000 years of Island history with a new trail. Families can also get hands-on with replica hats, helmets, swords and other historic artefacts.
Museum of Island History
The Museum of Island History at Newport’s historic Guildhall will open for a special workshop on Wednesday, 13th December.
There will be the opportunity to improve your chronology skills with an exciting trail, handle original and replica objects including fossils, prehistoric tools, and a Saxon helmet. Plus get crafty with historically inspired art activities.
Museums and Schools Programme
These events are organised by Isle of Wight Museums and Schools Programme which is currently led by the Isle of Wight Council.
The programme is funded by the Department for Education and consists of 11 local museums and the Cultural Education Partnership.
