Three weeks ago the Environment Agency carried out a ‘day of action’ on the Isle of Wight to crack down on illegal waste crime.
They responded to several reports across the Island and tweeted out photos from one particular site where they suspected illegal dumping of waste.
Warning issued to landowner
As the landowner was not on site during the inspection, the EA followed up with them afterwards and have today been able to provide an update.
A spokesperson from the EA told OnTheWight,
“We have revisited the site in question and completed our investigation. Our main concern was that several waste fridges were being stored at the site. There are strict rules regarding such storage due to the hazardous nature of some of the components. There were no permits in place that would allow this storage.
“A warning letter has been sent in response to the offence. This moderate level of response was influenced in part by the operator’s swift action in having the fridges removed to an appropriate and permitted facility.”
Anonymous reporting
The EA are very interested to hear about large or small-scale incidents and encourage members of the public to get in touch.
You can call Crimestoppers or the EA anonymously to report incidents by calling 0800 555111 (Crimestoppers) or 0800 807060 (EA).
