EU referendum: Isle of Wight Lib Dems launch ‘IN’ campaign

This in from the Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats. Ed

The Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats today (Tuesday) announced their local launch to keep Britain in the European Union.

With the date set for the EU elections on 23rd June, the Isle of Wight Lib Dems look to spearhead the arguments to keep Britain and the Island in the European Union. This has come shortly after the national party last week launched its campaign #Intogether as part of its commitment to keep Britain in the EU.

Robert Packham Chair of the Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats says:

“The Isle of Wight Lib Dems have been supporting a pro-EU message since the Liberal Democrats democratically adopted the policy at our conference last summer.

“We have always been a party that has supported cooperation and unity and we want to protect Britain’s place in the European Union. We have to make sure our campaign is a positive one, one that informs, but shows the benefits of the Island remaining in the EU. We are the party that wants to stay In, In Britain, In Europe.”

A Message of Hope
The campaign is set to come alive in the coming weeks and the Isle of Wight Lib Dems will be arguing how the EU is and could be directly helping to provide development on the Island.

A majority of Island businesses have already shown they are ready to support staying in the EU and the Isle of Wight Lib Dems are hoping more companies and groups who are pro-EU will rally around the campaign.

The Liberal Democrats are aiming to focus on a message of hope for the Island to push for benefits and aim to provide a message about the opportunities gained by being part of the EU.

Call on First Time Voters
The Isle of Wight Lib Dems also call on all sides of the campaign to make sure that the Island’s first-time voters and young people vote in the upcoming referendum.

Nick Belfitt, Head of the Isle of Wight Liberal Youth added:

“It’s a huge issue and one that will affect a lot of people on the Island. We have to be working with everyone and making sure everyone has access to the correct factual information.

“We also have to make sure that as many potential first-time voters will get their say. For younger people, the decision the country makes will affect their futures, and we have to ensure that whatever they decide they are attending the ballot box.”

Members of the Isle of Wight Lib Dem were in Ryde last week discussing the EU issue with people in the community.

Yes I am. But even if I was not, we need more young people to be interested and engaged on this Island.

I am deeply suspicious of the ultimate objectives of the European Union. Are we heading towards a United States of Europe? Why do the bulk of political parties, and the USA want us to remain in the EU? Why do we require our own National Parliaments when we could be just as badly ruled by a single European Parliament? If sbsolute Sovereignty over our laws, boundries and… Read more »

From quote from Donald Tusk EU: “”The references to an ever closer union among the peoples are… compatible with different paths of integration being available for different member states and do not compel all member states to aim for a common destination. It is recognised that the United Kingdom… is not committed to further political integration into the European Union” The EU is about cooperation on a… Read more »

So when the 75% of the financial sector relocate to mainland Europe followed no doubt by 75% of automotive jobs and any other sector which trades predominantly with Europe. Will it still be better out than in. The effective GDP of the country has already been impacted by this referendum process just by the possibility of leaving, with a 2% fall in the value of the pound… Read more »

BB read up on the proposed imposition of EU Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) that might dissuade the flight of the financial sector from the UK to EU countries.

Financial Transaction Tax Britain blocked the European Commission proposal for an EU-wide tax on financial transactions. But 11 eurozone countries decided to press on with the measure for themselves. London fears that even this more limited, eurozone-only tax would be extraterritorial and hurt the City of London. Eurozone countries remain divided over the details of the FTT and no deal is imminent. Even so, British officials are… Read more »

Yes Billy we will because despite what you say, leaving the EU will finally stop all those horrible foreigners invading our shores and telling us how big our coconuts can be.

Of course no one will sell us any coconuts once we leave.

As the option of ‘running things ourselves’ is rapidly disappearing and being replaced by ‘being run as serfs’ by a comparatively small unelected unaccountable supranational elite aided by compliant governments, and as we can no longer be self-sufficient, and as governments and ‘economies’ continue to compete rather than co-operate to make the best use of what resources remain and to halt and reverse the damage done to… Read more »

Its this kind of attitude we need to change on the Island. We have been dominated by to many of the same faces.

More young people should be involved, the young voice has been squashed for to long. I hope I can show young people can lead and get involved, even if the attitudes of some put them down.

I would suggest that the young have far more to win or lose by either staying in the EU or going than some us more mature voters. After all if we cut our own throats by leaving to spite the immigrants then it will be our kids and their kids that will suffer the consequences.

That is the crux of the In/Out problem.!

Will it better or worse in the long run that will affect our children and grandchildren.

Politicians on both sides will tell us it will be better under Brexit/No Brexit- but given their past performance can we believe them, especially when most of them will be long gone when its all goes tits up!

Then don’t listen to them. Listen to young people like myself who have been on the Erasmus program, who have been supported by the European Fund. You can say what you want but the EU has invested in young people where as this Tory government clearly has no desire to do so. Lets listen to those whos future is being shaped now rather then telling every young… Read more »

The EU has done precious little for most of us – only the minority. I certainly will NOT be voting IN at the referendum. We DID NOT join a United States of Europe, but for a trading partnership and we have had this political alliance forced upon us.
OUT, OUT, OUT!!!!

Silly silly boy, cutting off his nose to spite his face. If we leave we won’t be the 5th richest country in the world, we’ll be lucky to be in the top ten. It’ll be our kids and their kids that really suffer because of the stupidity of some.

I want out for reasons of Sovereignty, I want self rule for my country and a return to democracy, the EU is totally undemocratic, incompetent and often corrupt. That said, immigration is now impossible to ignore either. In the 12 months to September 2015, the government said today that 320,000 people arrived on our shores from elsewhere. Do you Liberals not accept that these numbers must put… Read more »
