Families looking for hands-on outdoor adventures this summer can head to Fort Victoria Country Park for guided fossil and rock pooling walks.
Led by the Isle of Wight Council’s Ranger, the sessions run throughout the school holidays and offer a chance to uncover fascinating sea creatures and prehistoric finds.
Spot crabs, fish and ancient fossils
Children and adults alike can explore the rocky shoreline, where anemones, tiny fish and crabs hide in shallow pools.
For those with a keen eye, fossil discoveries could include remains of turtles, sharks and even prehistoric crocodiles.
Anita Matheson, who leads the sessions, said,
“There’s nothing quite like seeing a child’s face light up when they spot their first crab or uncover a fossil that’s millions of years old.
“It’s a brilliant way to connect with nature and history!”
No booking needed and family-friendly prices
The sessions are open to all and aimed especially at families and young fossil hunters.
No booking is needed, and participants are asked to meet outside the Ranger’s Office at Fort Victoria.
Each walk lasts between one and one and a half hours.
Admission costs £3 per person or £10 per family, with payment accepted in cash only.
