Thanks to Suzanne and Alan Whitewood for this latest on the situation with the Extreme 40s racing leaving Cowes. In their own words. Ed
Although we have not been informed by the organisers of Extreme 40 racing and there is no new news on their official Website, we see that several other publications are running the story that the UK venue for racing during August 2012 will be Cardiff and not Cowes.
Cowes not included in 2012 venue announcements
We have contacted the organisers to clarify the situation, but when the other venues around the world were announced at the end of last year we did note that the UK venue and dates in August were not published and commented on VB that we wondered if Cowes would be the UK venue for 2012.
With the circuit starting on the 28th February in Muscat, Oman and the boats and crews gearing up an announcement on the UK venue was expected at any time now.
As the Extreme 40 event has for some time been run at the same time as Cowes Week (now Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week), the racing at Egypt Point with these very fast craft has been an added extra for spectators to enjoy.
“Working to ensure a presence at Cowes Week”
Cowes Week Ltd (CWL) have issued the following comments “Following the news that the UK edition of the Extreme Sailing Series will take place in Cardiff this year, Cowes Week Limited (CWL) continues to work closely with the team at OC Thirdpole to ensure a presence for these exciting boats at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week in 2012.
“There is a strong likelihood that a number of the Extreme 40s will participate in some demo racing at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week with the potential for racing close-to-shore, off the Green, after the rest of the regatta fleets have finished racing for the day. Since 2007 CWL has enjoyed working with the Extreme Sailing Series in its various guises and their racing has provided additional excitement for the many visitors to the regatta.
“CWL wishes the Series every success in Cardiff and hopes that Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week has played its part in generating the interest that the Series now enjoys.”
