For many years the site of the former Shoulder of Mutton pub in South Street, Newport has been a source of frustration for local councillors, residents and visitors to the County Town. The more recent demolition of the properties on Coppins Bridge has exacerbated the problem, creating a bigger eyesore.
Continuing an established collaboration creating public art, between Clatterford Tuition Centre, Newport Parish Council and Isle of Wight Council environment officers, the site will benefit from an injection of imagination. Moreys has also generously supported the project with the materials needed.
Newport skyline
A border of images depicting the Newport skyline will appear on the perimeter of the area, distracting the eye from the building site.
Clatterford students led by Juliet Lainson have been engaged in taking photographs of Newport and have learnt the process of turning them into stencils for the border. It has given them the opportunity to explore the idea of “community”, the impact of anti-social behaviour and how art can help create a sense of place.
Funded by Newport Parish Council, the idea was developed by the Newport Local Action Group and local councillors Julie Jones-Evans, Jane Perry and Matthew Price.
Councillor Jones-Evans said:
“It is common practice that building sites in towns and cities are surrounded by images to enhance the environment. Building on the success of the other public art projects with Clatterford, has meant that the students get the chance to improve the town while gaining valuable insights for themselves with everyone benefiting from the result.”
