Fallen Trees Causing Problems Around Island (updated)

Due to the strong winds hitting the Isle of Wight at the moment (and throughout the night) there are a number of reports of fallen trees.

Kelvin Currie says “Broken branch of tree partially blocking Afton Road near Freshwater Bay. Branch still dangling from tree!”

Justgosailing says “Tree half down in Longwood Lane Adgestone, can get past with care (though difficult for tall vehicles).”


Lisa Cumming told us (12.19), “Tree down by the converted barns at the top of Chillerton, another down a bit further into Chillerton by first load of houses, son is on number 6. They have just happened, and both are covering half the road at least.”

VB Reader Jess says “Coach Lane Brading – tree down & blocked.”
Update 10.49: The above tree has been cleared, but then another tree has fallen since, Sarah Woolford told us that it is half covering the road (on way out of Brading to Ashey).

Julie Robinson has just (10.11) told us there’s a “tree down at Billingham (just before Shorwell turnoff). Passable with care in a small car!”

Kirsty Bamford tells us (11.38) that there are “Large branches on the downs road….slow down people!”

Linda Cheeki Bassett told us that a flat roof has flown off a building in Cowes and into The Fountain. To which Jonny Hartley told us “It’s off Pascall Atkey’s roof, apparently…”

Donna Woodward Taylor says, “Beapers Shute now too apparently :-(”

Staplers closed, expect delays
The Isle of Wight council have confirmed that a tree down along Staplers at the junction with Fairlee Road is causing road closure. Vehicles (including buses) are being diverted and drivers should expect delays.

BT cables down along Staplers Road, BT has been informed.

Update 09.46: LEESON ROAD, VENTNOR: Tree down by the garlic fields. Highways staff are arranging clearance.

Update 10.15: Cowlease now passable – Police are guiding people through.

Southern Vectis also tell us that a fallen tree in Cowleaze Rd, Shanklin is causing diversion on the route 3 buses both ways via Victoria Rd.

Further trees down
WILMINGHAM LANE, FRESHWATER: Tree down between Berry Cottage and Middle Road. Road completely blocked.

COLWELL ROAD: Tree down 100m before Heathfield Road heading from Yarmouth direction. Highways staff investigating, unclear whether road is passable. Will provide update when known.

VENTNOR: Undercliff Drive, road blocked by a fallen tree. Drivers should avoid area.

YAVERLAND ROAD: Tree down adjacent to Rose Cottage. Road passable with care.

WHIPPINGHAM: Whippingham Road, near Racecourse Roundabout, tree has fallen. Road is passable.

WROXALL: Tree down by the entrance to the campsite. It is leaning at an angle across the road. Smaller cars can pass beneath but drivers should take care. Taller vehicles should avoid the area.

Update 11.59:
FORELAND ROAD, BEMBRIDGE: Fallen tree blocking pavement, road passable.

BINSTEAD: Newnham Lane, fallen tree blocking the highway at Firestone Copse end of the road. Motorists should avoid area.

Update 12.44
BRADING: Morton Old Road, tree down near Morton Cottage towards Roman Villa. highways team investigating.

COLWELL ROAD, FRESHWATER: Tree down at junction with Colwell Lane. Road blocked.

CALBOURNE ROAD: Tree down by the Blacksmiths Arms, highways staff investigating. Details to follow.

Update 13.29
BEMBRIDGE: Sandown Road, overhanging branches in road just past airport towards Bembridge. Cars need to swerve to avoid the branches so drivers should take extreme care when approaching.

SHANKLIN: Fallen tree currently blocking Alresford Road near the railway bridge.

Update 15.44
WELLINGTON ROAD, NEWPORT: Fallen branch blocking footpath. Pedestrians should take care when passing. Highways team arranging clearance.

GODSHILL: Reports of tree down in High Street. Road blocked. Motorists should avoid area.

SHANKLIN: Fallen tree currently blocking Alresford Road near the railway bridge.

Power cuts
Readers in Godshill and Chale reported powers cuts earlier, but they appear to have been fixed in Godshill. Let us know if you’ve had a problem.

Update 10.05: Southern and Scottish Energy tell us that they have faults reported across the whole of the South of the UK so are not able to give specific updates for the Island at the moment. Engineers are out and will report back around 11.30am.
