Isle of Wight Council’s trading standards service is hosting a seminar for residents and businesses on how to spot scams and avoid doorstep crimes.
The event is being held at Newport’s Riverside Centre on Wednesday 22 July and is in conjunction with the National Trading Standards Board Scambusters team.
Trading Standards Board Scambusters
Part of the day will see the National Trading Standards Board Scambusters Team manager Louise Baxter give a presentation on the work which is being carried out on a national level to prevent these scams entering country.
Officers from the council trading standards service will give details of what goes on locally with doorstep crime and scams and how working in partnership can protect local residents.
Two sessions
The day is split into two sessions, with the first held between 10am and 12pm and is themed on protecting vulnerable residents.
Topics will include the definition of a scam, explaining what doorstep crime is, what you can do to help and who to call if you need to pass information on.
The afternoon session between 2pm and 4pm is focussed on preventing doorstep crime and scams and gives people the chance to share their stories. It will also give information on how to protect yourself against scams.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public protection, said:
“Millions of pounds are lost across the country each year through residents and businesses falling foul of scams or doorstep crimes.
“The seminar will give important guidance and advice on the latest types of scams and crimes and what to look out for to help protect you and your friends and family.”
