Finding A Bacon Sandwich In Newport

It being a Monday morning, the thoughts of starting the week off with a bacon sandwich were just too tempting to ignore.

Finding A Bacon Sandwich In Newport“There are bound to be loads of places for that in Newport,” I thought – it being the pulsing, thrusting capital of the Isle of Wight.

After wandering around at pre-9am for quite a while, I found myself drawing a blank, so thought to illicit the help of the collective knowledge and experience of our Island Facebook and Twitter users.

I should have asked earlier, because once the suggestions started, they came in thick and fast.

If you happen to find yourself in a similar situation, here’s a summary of what came up …

The recommendations
Matt and Cat – BLT on Dodnor industrial estate, or Cappuccino van by end of the cycleway are the best at this time in am. Or, Blue Door?

Linda Cheeki Bassett – Cafe in Scarrots Lane

Julie Christine Packer and Annette Harris both suggested – Phils Diner!

Paul Butcher – Bitesize in the Square. Not open til 11 tho :)

Kayleigh Richter – The Square in St Thomas’ Square.

Jo Wheatley – Island Images opposite Hogshead

Emma Powell – Hogshead bacon Sarnie + hot drink = £1.49

Mike Downes – Go up to the industrial estate.. b + q carpark.. the best burgers and bacon rolls around, very yum !

Lisa Thorner – Defo b and q they are the best

Martin Welsford – Island Dreams in High St, County Hall end. :)

Katy Harwood – French Franks :)

Two offers that sounded great, but couldn’t be take up were from Jayne Stone who suggested heading over to Colwell and trying the Captain’ Cabin promising “Fresh cut bread and outstanding service,” not only that, but the “best bacon sandwich ever.” Despite all of this promise, the journey felt excessive.

Alli Reynard’s sounded great too “Mmmmm best bacon sarnie in newport is home cooked in My camper van :-)”

What I ended up with
As it turned out, I’d taken the decision to look at the cafe in Morrisons thinking it would be cheap – before the majority of the helpful advice had arrived.

I was right about the price – £1.79.

The roll wasn’t very good (pumped full of air?) and came unbuttered. The bacon was OK, but the whole experience was utility rather than enjoyable.

It didn’t cost much and I received what I paid for really. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Clearly the money I paid over wouldn’t be kept on the Island either, so it certainly wasn’t supporting Buy Local.

Live and learn eh? Next time, I’ll be following the advice of those wise ones who sent in suggestions.

Thank you to everyone who sent in a suggestion.
