Today, 23rd June 2021, is the Five Year anniversary of the European Union Referendum and members of Islanders for Europe are urging the UK government to effectively tackle the many new challenges to our nation’s stability, prosperity and liberties that have arisen since that day.

Islanders for Europe (I4E) was established a year after the Brexit referendum by a varied and diverse group of island residents.

They provide a platform on which local residents can engage with European issues and participate in the democratic development of the United Kingdom and other European states, as well as meet and socialise when regulations allow.

Active members
Members of I4E have written to our MP and business leaders, joined hundreds of thousands of campaigners across the country on marches in London, and even held quiz nights, picnics and get togethers for members.

The group is now affiliated to the European Movement – a cross-party organisation with over 160,000 supporters who are working to build closer relationships with the EU that will benefit the UK’s economy, our citizens, culture and international prestige.

“Our prosperity as a nation is at increased risk”
A spokesperson for Islanders for Europe said,

“Since the Brexit vote in 2016 we have witnessed threats to our nation’s stability, prosperity and our individual liberty. The stability of our United Kingdom has been rocked as governments in Scotland and Northern Ireland have come under increasing political and economic pressure to no longer be a part of the UK. Our union and centuries of shared history remains under threat.

“Our prosperity as a nation is at increased risk, shown by our farming and fishing industries dealing with the disastrous consequences of the government’s appalling Brexit deal, plus local Island employers who have a shortage of staff and skills, and businesses who have found importing and exporting goods a significant challenge.

“And our individual liberty and rights to travel, to work, to study and for some even the right to vote in elections have been taken away from Island residents and their families.

“It is not just the three million European Union citizens living in Great Britain who face extra hurdles imposed by the Home Office to live and work in the UK, but also British nationals who now have travel, residency and employment restrictions imposed on us.

“Is this the Brexit that Islanders voted for? Members of Islanders for Europe know that citizens were misled in 2016 about the consequences of Brexit. We will continue to support, to stand up for and be a friendly space for our European friends and all Islanders who value closer connection with European businesses, people and places.”
