Golf links road flooded

Flood Alert issued as water levels rise in the Eastern Yar

It’s been a week of heavy rain, so no surprise that this morning (Wednesday) a Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency (EA).

They advise residents along the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge to ‘Be prepared’.

The warning reads:

The water level in the Eastern Yar is high and rising. In the past 24 hours, 30mm of rain was recorded at Wroxall.

From 18:00 this evening the river will come out of bank at Whitwell High Street and Langbridge.

It will restrict access to Horringford and be close to the top of the riverbank at Alverstone.

At Sandown, Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road will flood, and levels will be high at Sandown Bridge, the sewage treatment plant and Fort Holiday Park.

Further heavy rain is forecast over the next 24 hours, with a possible 20mm to 40mm expected.

Water levels will continue to rise and we expect to issue a Flood Warning later today.

We are operating the sluice at Bembridge to help reduce water levels across Brading Marshes while neap tides continue over the next few days. This will not affect property.

We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.

If you live near the river, please take action now to ensure you can protect your property.
