The Director of Music of the Newchurch Male Voice Choir, Roy Bevan had the pleasure of presenting Don Emery with the President’s Silver Medallion in recognition of Don’s 28 years of service to the Choir.

On Saturday 30th April, in the packed Newchurch Church Hall, Don’s career in Choir was recounted.

28 years and counting
He joined in 1988 when he came to the Isle of Wight as a Chief Inspector in the Hampshire Police and joined the Bass section. During his time he has been Chairman twice.

Don said,

“I have enjoyed these years of singing with the Choir. The Friday night practices are still as refreshing and fun now as when I first started. It is only a pity that there are so few ‘younger’ men joining us, I know they would enjoy it.

“The Choir’s ethos of singing for the pleasure of doing so, entertaining people, and all to raise money for various charities has enhanced my life here on the Island.

“To be recognised by the men by this appointment is a personal honour that I will cherish. I am looking forward to celebrating the Choir’s 50th year in 2017.”

As is tradition, the event concluded with an impromptu sing-song or ‘after glow’ as it is known.
