Frank James midsummer celebration marks milestone (gallery)

Thanks to Steve for this latest report from the Friends of Frank James. Ed

The Friends of Frank James summer solstice celebration (on Sunday 21st June) marked the completion of essential and long overdue roof and guttering repairs to protect the Grade II listed building from further damage by rain and pigeons, following the issue of an Urgent Works Notice by the Isle of Wight council.

Work carried out by Friend
The work was done by Frank James Friend and Island professional Tony Williams of Lead Overcoat Ltd., and was made possible with help from CADO (Community Assets in Difficult Ownership) and Historic England (previously English Heritage), who worked with the Council to ensure that the owner’s inability to carry out repairs would be overcome. Costs will be recovered from the owners.

Over a decade of neglect
Thirteen years of neglect and vandalism at the well-regarded former hospital had resulted in extensive damage to roof tiles, leadwork, and the distinctive dormer windows, in addition to the damage caused at illegal entry points.

These were repaired in recent months with the help of another FJ Friend and professional Richard Manser of Safesite IOW, and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

Campaign continues
The Friend’s campaign to halt and reverse the damage and restore the site to use continues, with the gratitude of the owners, who await the result of their latest planning application.

The repair of the Grade II listed boundary wall damaged in October 2013 by an Island Waste contractor’s vehicle is also eagerly awaited.

Thanks to Josh Aitken-Dunkeld and Chloe Pengelly for the photos from the day.
