Although motorcyclists represent a small proportion of licence holders, they are involved in a significant amount of collisions, usually involving other vehicles.
The course helps motorcyclists to ride defensively and anticipate hazards on the road. A wide range of techniques are covered, including advanced riding and handling skills, observation, cornering, overtaking, braking and filtering. The course also includes a basic first aid training to assist people if they are first on the scene of an accident.
New riders and refreshers
Also included is a practical ride with an advanced motorcyclist, enabling people to draw on the skills discussed during the theory sessions. The session provides an opportunity for instructors to provide feedback on people’s riding techniques.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council Executive member for public protection and PFI, said:
“This course is a great opportunity for people new to riding and those in need of a refresher course. Unfortunately, often through no fault of their own, bikers form a disproportionately high percentage of the UK’s serious road traffic incidents and this course – and its sister course Better Driving Course which is aimed at car drivers – plays an important role in making our roads safer.”
The course is free and is run over two sessions at Sandown Fire Station from 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday 18 March and Thursday 19 March 2015. Individual assessments are booked at a later date.
