Grave Concerns For Northwood HouseFaced with the withdrawal of management and maintenance services from Northwood Park by the Isle of Wight Council, the Friends of the House and Park are preparing to fight to secure the future of Cowes most significant public green space.

Lawns and flower beds left untended, bins not emptied, litter not picked and toilets and play areas locked are just some of the conditions that threaten to undermine people’s enjoyment of the historic parkland if the gap that will be left by the Council is not filled.

Need to secure future of the park
Northwood Park is an important recreational and educational resource, a high quality heritage asset and public green space located in the heart of Cowes.

The Friends are committed to its protection, conservation and restoration. They are now calling on the people of Cowes to join them in the battle to secure the park’s future.

The immediate objective of the Friends is to establish a clearer picture of how people use the park and its value to the local community.

Take part in survey
A six week survey will be launched on 20 September when a survey questionnaire will be published on the Friends’ website.

This will be followed up by face-to-face interviews with park users and visitors to the forthcoming exhibition by Cowes Heritage group in Northwood House, which runs from 23 October to 14 November.

Fabric of the town
The Friends state “Northwood Park is a vital part of the fabric of the town. It supports a thriving bowls club, provides amenities for young children and families and is the location of the town’s war memorial. It is also the setting for one of Cowes most important historic buildings and is therefore far too valuable an asset to be allowed to fall into decline.”
