On Saturday just passed, Christopher Jenkins’ new exhibition, “From the Shore”, opened at Quay Arts.
It’s a collaborative exhibition created with pupils from St Catherine’s School in Ventnor, in response to Kurt Jackson’s current exhibition, also being shown at Quay Arts.
Prior to the exhibition opening last week, the pupils from St Catherine’s joined Chris at a number of beaches around Ventnor, as well as visiting the Michael West Gallery.
A visit to Bonchurch beach saw the children and young people brave the elements whilst painting postcards, recording sounds, taking photographs and thinking of words connected to the beach. A group spent time on Niton beach where they created three large canvases.
They painted on location and made use of items found on Niton beach and items collected the previous day at Bonchurch. At the end of the week a group returned to Quay Arts to put the finishing touches to the canvases and to build the exhibition.
The stunning exhibition has made use of a range of media including painting, photography, the written word and sounds from the seashore.
Mrs Tilling, Art Teacher at St Catherine’s, explained
“This has been a fantastic opportunity for everyone at St Catherine’s. It has been lovely to see all the learners working together with Chris Jenkins and we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The exhibition is a credit to everyone involved and I recommend you go and see it”.
The exhibition runs until 21 February in the Learning Curve Gallery at Quay Arts, Newport. Free entrance.
