Floating Bridge 6 with boats in the background

Gale-force gusts on Isle of Wight: Car damaged on the Floating Bridge by runaway life raft

A car has been damaged on the Floating Bridge this afternoon (Wednesday) due to the high winds.

The Isle of Wight council said it is investigating an incident which occurred earlier today when three life rafts blew out of their cradle in strong winds and into a car coming onto the vessel.

A spokesperson confirmed one vehicle had been damaged, but the service across the River Medina continues to operate.

No further details could be given at this stage.

Weather warning
The Island is currently subject to a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office for strong winds.

It has been in place since 6am this morning and continues until 8pm.

Damage across the Island
Some cross-Solent travel providers have cancelled sailings and trees have fallen across the Island, but are now cleared.

A beach hut in Sandown lost its roof and two flag poles were snapped in half by the strong winds.
