More than £11,000 was given to seven Isle of Wight charities in the latest round of grants from WightAID.
Sailors with disabilities, young ice skaters and a community radio station were among the recipients of money from the Island charitable giving foundation.
Wet Wheels
More than 100 sailors with disabilities will be given the chance to get on the water with Wet Wheels, thanks to a £1,500 donation.
The charity, which has a specially adapted boat on the Isle of Wight, as well as others around the country, said the money would primarily be used at Yarmouth Week.
Chief executive Geoff Holt said,
“We will be able to give 120 people some quality time on the water.”
Andrew Cassell Foundation
Another charity helping sailors with disabilities also benefitted.
The Andrew Cassell Foundation will use its £500 grant to buy a recovery net…which will make the foundation’s activities even safer, allowing easier extrication of disabled sailors if they go overboard.
Matt Grier, of the foundation, said,
“It can normally take five people to pull a wet person out of the sea but this device, developed with Island company SeaSafe, makes things a lot easier.”
Other beneficiaries
Other grants went to:
- Wight Ice Leisure – £3,000 to support young Island ice skaters needing to travel to the mainland to train and compete.
- Vectis Radio – £2,599 for a replacement computer.
- The Phoenix Project – £2,940 for a new fully accessible entrance to its Haylands HQ in Ryde.
- Wildheart Animal Sanctuary– £500 for the Focas (correct) Festival to educate children.
- St Catherine’s School, Ventnor – £750 for a cross trainer for its sensory gym.

WightAID donors Richard and Marianne Atterbury were present at the cheque handovers at IFPL’s Calbourne headquarters.
