Fun, learning and road safety have been combined in a new playground project at Gurnard Primary School.
The school has worked with Island Roads to paint a host of new markings which transform a playground area at the Baring Road school.
What’s new
The new features include a compass, road layout with zebra crossing and traffic lights, a hopscotch grid, Twister mat and other play and learning aids.
The project came about following discussion with parents Hannah Clark and Jason Boulter whose son Ted, eight, is a Gurnard Primary pupil. Hannah works at Island Roads so connected the school with the company’s design and lining supervisor Spencer Jarman.
Paint and labour costs met by Island Roads
Spencer worked with Helen Sunderland, early years teacher who led the playground project, to design the playground additions and during Easter Island Roads’ lining partners WJ completed the work.
The paint and labour costs were met by Island Roads as part of its commitment to supporting community projects.
Sunderland: It’s absolutely amazing
Helen said,
“The work has really enhanced the outside space and the children love it – it’s absolutely amazing.
“Spencer was so helpful in helping us design the project and the work completed by WJ is perfect. What we particularly love about the project is that it will help us teach our road safety lessons and also provides a fun learning area for the children to play in.”
Spencer was able to provide time to help design the project under Island Roads’ volunteering programme which encourages staff to take two days paid annual leave each year to support community projects.

Spencer said,
“It was a pleasure to work with Helen and Emma and we hope the children have fun with the new markings while at the same time learn some road safety lessons.”
