The Vectis Decorative Fine Arts Society returns to Quay Arts in Newport on Thursday 21st April.
They’ll be welcoming Dr Paul Roberts to talk on Sicilian Splendours. Because of its strategic position, Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean and home of Mount Etna has always been fought over by many different rulers.
From the Greeks to the Romans, Byzantines and Arabs followed by the Normans, all settled or invaded the island, lured by its fertile lands and strategic location.
Each culture leaving its architectural and artistic heritage on the island. This lecture traces the influences which have shaped its history.
About the lecturer
Dr Paul Roberts BA Hons MPhil PhD, is the newly appointed Sackler Keeper of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Previously he was Senior Roman Curator in the Department of Greece and Rome at the British Museum.
He studied at the Universities of Cambridge, Sheffield and Oxford and lived in Italy for several years. He has excavated in Britain, Greece, Libya, Turkey, and in particular Italy. His research focuses on the day-to-day lives of ordinary people in the Greek and Roman worlds.
The exhibition Storms War and shipwrecks: Treasures from the Sicilian Seas will be at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford from the 21 June to 25 September 2016.
Where and when
The Lecture takes place on Thursday 21st April and begins at 8pm. Quay Arts is open from 6.30pm should you wish to purchase supper or a glass of wine.
