Raffles for coach parties staying at a south Wight hotel have raised £850 towards the purchase of what promises to be a useful piece of ‘ early warning’ medical equipment at Newport’s St Mary’s Hospital.

The raffles were staged at the Mede Hamstede Hotel in Queens Road, Shanklin over the past 12 months, in aid of a £1,750 portable heart-scanner.

Hotel collection handed to Friends
On Friday last week, hotel manager Jean Powell met members of the Friends of the hospital to hand over the £850 that was raised from the events.

June Ring, a Friends’ board member who had encouraged the hotel to run the raffles, said the portable heart-scanner would be most useful in detecting the early signs of heart problems. It could be used both in the hospital and in the community.

“Further money for the scanner is expected to be raised by members of the Island fire brigade, in memory of a young fireman who died of a heart-attack while on duty,” she added.

The Friends’ general manager, Vincent Thompson, said, “It’s wonderful that this holiday hotel and its visitors should be so supportive of this scanner project.”
