Hope for Derelict Tesco Site in Ventnor

For many years Ventnor residents and visitors have had to endure the eyesore of the site owned by Tesco opposite the Central Car Park.

At Monday night’s Ventnor Town Council (VTC) meeting, Cllr Chris Welsford, County Councillor for Ventnor West, told the meeting that he’d had been working hard to find a solution to the problem of the eyesore.

Tesco commits to tidy-up
We understand that Tesco suggested some time ago, that they don’t plan to develop the store in the immediate future, however, after some influence from the enforcement officer, they have agreed to the following:

  • Re-scaffold the street elevation with platform access
  • The roof and windows will be checked
  • The front of the building will be painted
  • Hoardings at the back of the building will be restabilised
  • An ecology survey will be carried out for habitation of bats or birds
  • A drugs and paraphernalia search through the site will be carried out
  • Vegetation from the site will be removed
  • A net scaffold will be erected at the front of the building

We understand that this work will start within the next three weeks and should be completed by the end of August.

Legal action over scaffold injury
Cllr Rees thanked Cllr Welsford for his hard work on the matter and added that he’d been visited by a solicitor acting on behalf of a lady who was injured by the current scaffold poles.

Scruffy site not welcome
A few weeks back, a new sign was spotted on the front of the building. Clearly posted by someone equally unhappy about the situation it read as follows ….
