Lauren Matthews Gets A 1st For Inspirational University Project

We love to hear about the successes of Islanders whether it be in sport, the arts, fundraising or even academia.

The venue:One such success story that caught our attention this week was the (All Along) The Watchtower university project by Lauren Matthews from the Isle of Wight.

Lauren is about to graduate from UCA, Farnham, after studying Interior Architecture & Design BA (Hons).

1st class honours
For her final project, spanning the last nine months, she has mythically converted The Vectis Building, Newport into a bar and music venue which celebrates the history of the Isle of Wight Music Festivals. She got a 1st (A*)!

Using Solo Music Agency (the current festival promoters) as her mythical client, with their agreement and support, the venue is chronologically divided between the original and current festivals.

Multi purpose venue
Lauren tells us that the venue has differing uses throughout the year. During the day it is used as a self-serve drinking venue which educates users about the festival’s heritage.

During the evenings it is again used as a stimulating drinking space and as a music venue with a capacity of 250. Throughout the festival weekend, it is exclusively used for filming daytime interviews and acoustic performances for television and as an after-show party venue for performers and VIPs during the festival evenings.

Making the most of the sun
Taking inspiration from the current festival site at Seaclose Park, Lauren tells us that she used the sun’s position as a design tool and created openings to the south-west facade so the sun sets behind the venue’s stage.

Openings and a glass walkway were also created in the north-east facade, generating views to the festival site. From the stage area and DJ booth, performers can view the festival site, feeding their aspirations to perform at the Isle of Wight Festival.

Fantastic project
We’re sure you’ll agree that the idea behind the venue and its multi purpose use is excellent.

Lauren tells us that the project has generated interest since the beginning. She set up a Website with visuals and graphics where you can see more.

Well done Lauren, this is excellent work – you just need to get John Giddings to put the money up now ;-)
