Thanks to Suzanne Whitewood for sharing her report from the latest Girlguiding event. In her own words, Ed
More than 100 members and parents enjoyed a fantastic day out at the Girlguiding South West Region Roadshow at Sandown Zoo.
All the girls were encouraged to bring along a friend who was not a member, so they too could get a taste of all the exciting and adventurous opportunities Guiding has to offer.
At the event, everyone enjoyed a presentation showcasing all the exciting things that Girlguiding members had recently taken part in.
Girlguiding can make a real difference to girls and young women
Region Chief Commissioner, Solange Rebours, on her first ever visit to the Isle of Wight, said “I want to take this opportunity to encourage more people to join in the fun, and volunteering as an adult is a fantastic way to make a real difference to girls and young women in your community whilst gaining amazing experiences yourself. Whether you can help out every few hours or make a regular commitment, we can find a role for you.”
Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section girls also enjoyed listening to a special talk by Tracey Dove, a member of the zoo staff, who explained the important work Sandown Zoo is doing to conserve tigers in the wild.
Tracy said that she had gained her interest in animals as well as the world of nature whilst a member of Gurnard Guides. After the formal presentation the girls and their families were able to spend the rest of the day enjoying all the Zoo has to offer.
Karen Hull an adult leader with Ryde Rangers said “Guiding has done so much for me – I’ve made friendships that will last for ever. To visit the Zoo is always a thrill as the surroundings are perfect for the animals.”
Gemma’s resource pack a hit
To help with funding the Zoo’s conservation work Ryde Ranger Gemma Hull, who is working for her Queen’s Guide Award, has compiled a resource pack and designed a badge.
These were on sale and can be used in conjunction with animal conservation work across the UK.
Gemma said “I have been a supporter of the zoo for many years and have had shared ownership of Zena, the White Bengal Tigress most of that time since I was given a gift ownership for Christmas when I was about 12. I love the zoo and I think the way they take care of the animals there is fantastic, so to be able to help them with their project is just what I always hoped I’d be able to do.”
The roadshow will tour several exciting locations across South West England over the coming months.
