Isle of Wight Farmers Report Schmallenberg Infection

If you watched or heard the news yesterday (and again this morning) you will have seen mention of Schmallenberg infection.

LambThe fairly young virus, about a year old, affects unborn livestock (mostly sheep at the moment), causing miscarriage and birth defects.

We were sad to learn that Schmallenberg has spread widely across the south of England, with cases reported on the Isle of Wight.

Unlikely to cause disease in humans
It’s thought the virus, which originated in the Netherlands and Germany, spreads through midges and mosquitoes.

However, it’s important to note that Defra have stated that, “The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says it is unlikely Schmallenberg virus would cause disease in humans.”

With lamb peaking time almost upon us, this could be a big blow for farmers, so our thoughts are with all those who are affected.
