Island Girls Survive Egyptian Coach Crash

Two young people from the Island are thanking their lucky stars that they are safe after having been involved with the recent horrific coach crash in Egypt which killed 12 people.

Pyramids in EgyptHolly Cameron, 19, from Freshwater and her friend Jamie from Newport were riding near the front of the coach on their way to the pyramids when it crashed at 5:54am.

A scene of devastation greeted them after they escaped the vehicle through smashed windows.

The police escort that accompanies all trips to the pyramids was killed in the accident.

Holly is relatively unhurt, but still has shards of glass in her feet. Jamie is suffering from internal lacerations.

To add to the difficulties, the girls, who had worked hard all summer to save up the money for their week-long trip, had travelled with XL, so had no return flights available to them.

Through swift actions of the family, the girls will return on a flight tomorrow with medical personnel to monitor them on their journey. Ambulances will bring them to the Island.

The officially-given reason for the crash is that a lorry travelling in the opposite direction burst its tyre burst and crashed into the coach.

We wish them a safe journey home and a speedy recovery. Our thoughts go out to their family.
