Fantastic news for two Island groups who have just come into some much needed cash, thanks to the latest round of Comic Relief grants.
We hear that the Island Youth Water Activities Centre who are based in Cowes have just received a whopping £9,000.
This bumper grant will go towards part-funding a programme that targets young people who are at risk of offending or have offended.
The young people will be given the opportunity to receive training in water sports such as canoeing, sailing and power boating.
The programme, which previously received support from the High Sheriff’s Trust, has been hugely successful in helping students further themselves, whether it be through work experience at the Centre or through further training resulting in work in the marine industry.
Mike Acton from IYWAC said “The discipline and teamwork which these youngsters have learnt at IYWAC has had a valuable effect on their readiness to engage with teachers and others in their schools.
“This grant from Comic Relief will go towards funding twice weekly drop in sessions as well as two day yachting trips and two regattas to celebrate their achievements.”
Money for debt advice service
Frontline, the organisation that provides debt advice and assistance to those who are struggling with debt and often at risk from losing their homes has been awarded over £1,000 by the Comic Relief Grant programme.
The grants have all been made possible with the help of the Isle of Wight Community Fund, who manage them locally.
