Island Youngsters To Share Global Conference Experiences

On 23 November, five Ryde High School students will be sharing their memories of a once-in-a-lifetime trip to America where they were part of a major international event. Rachael Hansford, Ian Pethick, Rachel Walton, Angela Rackett and Gethan Pickard were all participating in the annual Global Young Leaders Conference which was held in Washington DC and New York during the summer.

The Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) is a unique leadership development program that brings together outstanding young people from around the world to build critical leadership skills in a global context. GYLC offers students the opportunity to learn from and exchange ideas with some of the world’s top business leaders, policy officials, lobbyists, journalists, diplomats and academics.

The quintet was among over 350 other students from around the globe who took part in the conference. During the visit, they took part in discussions ranging from science & technology, healthcare, human rights and even weapons of mass destruction. They also visited famous buildings and landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Guggenheim Museum and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The five students will give a presentation in the Council Chamber at County Hall in Newport from 1800 on 23 November. They have already begun to engage their fellow students in the project and hope to share their experiences with their local communities.
