Standing room only at the say no to co2 pipeline meeting

Islanders voice concerns over ExxonMobil’s proposed gas pipeline at Green Party meeting

More than 150 Islanders packed into the Riverside centre last night in support of the “Say No to the CO2 Pipeline” meeting, hosted by the Isle of Wight Green Party.

The start of the meeting was delayed by 15 minutes due to overwhelming interest in Exxon Mobil’s proposals to construct a gas pipeline across the west and south of the Isle of Wight, with attendees moving chairs into the largest room and many other residents left standing.

‘Pressure on land owners’
Geology teacher and Green Party spokesperson, Vix Lowthion, gave a presentation about the oil company’s plans plus some background and updates about recent developments, including the pressure on Island landowners to allow access for surveying.

Campaign steering group
The meeting also heard from Green Party councillor, Claire Critchison, about the establishment of a campaign steering group, followed by many public questions and comments from the floor, chaired by Green Party co-chair Cameron Palin.

Lowthion: Huge turnout demonstrates the strength of feeling against Exxon’s plans
Vix Lowthion said,

“Exxon’s extensive proposals for a pipeline from Fawley across the breadth of the Island will have a devastating  impact on our landscape and wildlife habitats.

“The huge turnout at this meeting demonstrates the strength of feeling against their plans and that Islanders are not going to accept the damage to our woodlands and coastal areas.  We need to invest in clean, renewable energy – not perpetuate our reliance on oil!”

Have your say
The initial public consultation period has been extended to 30th September and can be accessed via the official website.

A facebook group for concerned Islanders has been formed. It is called SAY NO to CO2 Pipeline across the IOW.
