Isle of Wight artist, Jo Hummel, launches latest exhibition in Sweden

If you happen to be in Sweden over the next three weeks, Malmo to be precise, pop into the Nordic Art Agency and you’ll be able to see work by Isle of Wight artist, Jo Hummel.

Having exhibited her work around the world, Jo’s latest exhibition, A True Story, runs until 25th May 2022.

The fruit of a human existence that spans the divide between reality and fiction
Jo’s artworks are described as “complex conjunctions of thought, idea, memory, whim and all other nebulous and transient mental machinations”.

The commentary for the exhibition reads,

The story, the fiction of the mind, is rendered true by the action. Simple enough, but what of all those fictions that may be true? If the artwork made is a realised truth, may not all ideas, fictitious by nature, be true in potential? Perhaps it is not so straightforward.

An idea is an indefinable thing because it grows and changes, dividing into multiple strands, combining with other notions, shifting shape and meaning.

More accurate may be to say that Hummel’s artworks, resolved and concrete as they hang upon the wall, are rich, complex conjunctions of thought, idea, memory, whim and all other nebulous and transient mental machinations.

They are real, standing before us to be scrutinised in humble materiality, each a unique realisation of eighty six billion neurons’ invisible, immeasurable, “unreal” work over the course of thirty nine years.

They are the fruit of a human existence that spans the divide between reality and fiction, to which Hummel now looks for the biggest answers.
