Boxing Day Swims are a great tradition on the Isle of Wight (as well as elsewhere in the world), and there are several you can choose from if you are planning to take part this year.
Many decide to take the plunge adorned in fancy dress or full wet suits, and the braver souls in just their swimming costumes – and we’ve even seen a few mankinis over the years.
Due to the tides, the traditional Ryde Boxing Day Swim won’t be taking place this year. However, Waterside Pool will be open for swimmers on Boxing Day from 9am.
Gurnard
Things begin a little later over in Gurnard, with the refreshing dip starting at 11am.
Collections will be made for Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Every donation helps inspire brighter futures for young people living through and beyond cancer.
The dip takes place opposite The Woodvale and beside Gurnard Sailing Club.
Ventnor
Ventnor traditionally attracts some of the highest numbers, with thousands of onlookers and hundreds taking part.
Organised by Ventnor Carnival Association, whose volunteers will be out with collection buckets for the CA as well as local cancer charity, P.A.T.C.H.
The whistle blows at midday and onlookers are encouraged to stay around in the town and support the local cafes and pubs that are open.
Shanklin
Over in Shanklin at Small Hope Beach, swimmers will be braving the water at 12.30pm – although there’ll be lots to entertain you at the Salix Cafe beforehand.
They promise sounds from the Silver Machine Roadshow from 11am.
There will be a collection for the Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.
