Newport Enough is Enough protest by Jan Welsh

Isle of Wight campaigners call for a General Election: Join the rally this Saturday

Members of the public who believe that a General Election should be called are invited to head to Newport this Saturday.

Organised by cross-party groups such as Isle of Wight branches of Enough is Enough and the People’s Assembly, those taking part in the rally will be demanding that a General Election is called, following the months of turmoil and chaos in Government.

The two Conservative leadership campaigns saw just a small group of residents in the country (Conservative Party members) choosing Liz Truss as Prime Minister, and an even smaller group (Conservative MPs) choosing Rishi Sunak to succeed Truss after she resigned just 45 days into her premiership.

Growing cost of living crisis
With the Bank of England increasing interest rates to 3 cent today, many Islanders already struggling with the fuel and cost of living crisis, will undoubtedly find themselves unable to cover the inevitable rise in mortgage or credit card interest rates.

A range of speakers
News OnTheWight is told that a large crowd is expected to attend, with those take part invited to take along banners, flags and even Guy Fawkes.

Among others, speakers will include Island Labour’s Richard Quigley and IW Green Party’s Vix Lowthion.

Take part
If you want to take part, or hear what campaigners have to say, head to St James’s Square in Newport for the midday start on Saturday 5th November.
