Windemere Ferry

Isle of Wight CEO off to council where unreliable, short distance ferry needs replacing

John Metcalfe, Isle of Wight Council chief executive, who is moving to take over a similar role at Cumbria County Council at the end of the month, must be relieved he is leaving behind the White Elephant also known as Cowes Floating Bridge 6.

The Windermere Ferry has been operating since 1991, is often out of service for maintenance, involving costly repairs and leaving motorists facing a lengthy detour.
