Isle of Wight council and Island Roads unveil revealing film on Leeson Road’s significant landslide (watch)

Isle of Wight council and Island Roads have released a new short film, charting the monitoring and findings at Leeson Road.

On 10th December 2023, a catastrophic landslide, considered to be one of the largest landslides recorded on the Island in 100 years, took place in Bonchurch.

It resulted in evacuations of 20 properties, some condemned properties, as well as the road between Ventnor and Shanklin being closed for many months, opening for the 2024 summer holidays before closing again in September 2024 for borehole drilling.

The new film features Jo Saunders from Island Roads explaining the situation at the landslip, speaking with other experts involved in the project.

Jo explains what has happened, what is happening now and setting out some of the findings and future of the road.

Movement continues
There has been a continued collapse beneath the rear of the cafe, bringing the cliff face to just 10m from the road (as opposed to the previous 30m).

New fissures and cracks have been identified in the cliff face and behind the landslip area – highlighting that further weaknesses have developed since the landslip.
