Isle of Wight landslip prompts evacuation of 20 properties (update 2)

20 properties were evacuated last night (Sunday) following a landslide in Bonchurch.

Isle of Wight council officers attended the scene at Bonchurch Shute and Smugglers Haven and liaised with police to support and assist residents, and ensure they were safe.

The landslip has impacted several gardens on the section of road closest to the sea, and police say a large void has appeared next to the Smugglers Haven cafe.

This morning the council will be sending a drone up around the area to capture the extent of the damage.

Police: “The cafe is hanging on”
A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Police said,

“The cafe is hanging on, as there is no front.

“Several gardens of residential properties have also fallen and the landslip is putting houses at risk.”

IWC: Will be fully assessed in the daylight
An Isle of Wight council spokesperson told News OnTheWight,

“Approximately 20 properties were evacuated. The majority of households chose to stay with friends and family, and for those unable to do so, temporary accommodation has been provided.

“Island Roads have closed the Road between Bonchurch Shute and Shanklin, whilst police officers have remained at the scene overnight.

“With daylight the full extent of the landslip and the impact can be fully assessed.”

Road closure and diversions
The road is still closed and route three buses are being diverted via Wroxall.

Due to the landslide, buses are unable to serve between Shanklin Daish hotel to Chimney Steps until further notice. Your nearest stops will be Trinity Church or Shanklin Library.

Significant movement
Following heavy rain in October and November, there was significant ground movement between Bonchurch and Luccombe, leading to footpaths being closed off for people’s safety.
