Festival goers will be well aware of Oxfam’s presence at festival across the UK each year.
In 2009, Oxfam is campaigning to increase awareness of the human impact of climate change. If you would like to be part of the solution and help create a sea of change at this years Isle of Wight Festival, you might want to read on.
Oxfam are looking for 35 bubbly, confident, passionate and fun volunteers to work over the four days of the festival next month and be part of something local that makes a difference to the lives of some of the world’s poorest communities.
What do I have to do?
It’s simple. Chat to different people in the midst of festival magic. Paint people’s faces blue so they can stand shoulder to shoulder in a sea of change.
Why?
Oxfam are looking to engage everyone in fresh and friendly ways across the summer at a number of festivals. They hope to gain support to help kick-start a planned sea of blue faces rally in London this December. In doing so we will help demonstrate the need for G20 members to commit seriously to tackling climate change at their December summit in Copenhagen. The poorest people are suffering through changes in climate. Action needs to happen globally.
Action needs to happen locally on the Isle of Wight!
Have I got what it takes?
Oxfam need people who are good at communicating ideas, enthusiastic, and inspirational, with an awareness of Oxfam’s campaigns.
As a campaigner, you will be fed, watered and given some funky pieces of Oxfam clothing to wear.
Working in pairs, you will be undertaking an array of tasks to engage festival goers – from painting people’s faces blue and organising them into a human sea to chatting to people and groups about Oxfam.
All of this will be happening while some of the world’s best musicians perform live in an incredible festival atmosphere. Your shift will fly and you will have plenty of free time to enjoy yourself.
Rachael Gurr, a volunteer at last year’s Oxfam festivals, had this to say:
“I volunteered in 2007 and knew no one else. I had a fantastic time, made a great bunch of friends who I returned to work with at festivals in 2008 and will see again in 2009. Some days were cold, wet and muddy but you’re involved, part of something special. Its fantastic!”
Volunteers will be required to work in shifts of 8.5 hours and will have to complete 3 of these shifts across the festival, during the day-light hours of Thursday, 11th June till Sunday, 14th of June. All applicants will be required to make a deposit of £175 but this is fully refundable upon completion of your duties at the festival.
You don’t have to be an expert on Oxfam or climate change; you just need to have a voice, passion, interest and be intent on making a difference. For further information about the application process please visit the Oxfam Festival Campaigns site.
Applications close Friday, 15th May and applicants must be over 18.
