Isle of Wight: Jewel of the South: Final episode airs this week

In the final episode of Isle of Wight: Jewel of the South Summer is almost over, but in the seaside town of Sandown, there’s still plenty to look forward to as the town gears up for the Sandown Carnival; keen to drum up new custom, cafe owner Vivette Fryer (pictured above) is planning a barbecue to give revellers a taste of her authentic Caribbean cooking.  But will the unpredictable British weather scupper her best made plans?

Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum
At the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum in Ryde, it’s an exciting day for the volunteers who have spent years meticulously restoring an old bus that served on the Island almost one hundred years ago.

In this episode, it’s the moment of truth as they crank up its vintage engine for the very first time.  Are they just a few tugs away from triumph – or will all their hard work be about to hit the skids?

Kite surfing champion
In Colwell Bay, former kite surfing champion Tom Court is making the most of the windy weather to brush up on his skills and practice a few of his epic moves, ready for his next big competition.

Isle of Wight Distillery
In Seaview, following the popularity of his trademark gin, local distiller Xavier Baker’s latest offering is a sumptuous, spiced rum, made from some of the Island’s locally grown fruits and botanicals.

With Cowes Week looming, it’s a golden opportunity for Xavier to test out the fruits of his labour at the world-famous regatta.

Hot air balloons
In Downend, at Robin Hill Country Park, Laura Baxter and her colleague Verity McCormick are preparing for one of the most spectacular events of the summer – Night Glow – a choreographed display of hot air balloons that light up the sky.

The crowd have gathered, but with winds looking a little too gusty, the chances of launching them are still up in the air.
