Isle of Wight Monopoly Launch: Eileen Eaton (Podcast)

Earlier today VB attended the official launch of the Isle of Wight version of Monopoly.

Monopoly Launch: Eileen Eaton (Podcast)After the launch, we caught up with Eileen Eaton, a teacher at the school, whose class came up with the idea.

Eileen explained how, through the creative curriculum programme, the children had been looking at ways of promoting the Island through their studies.

She told VB how the seven to nine year olds in the Bear Grylls Class started out by making models and designing products, before the project escalated into the proposal for an Island version of Monopoly.

Displays in the school hall are testament to the depth of work on the project and Eileen told us how the children developed skills in persuasive writing, collaboration, history, geography and maths.

What is the creative curriculum?
Rather than dictating to children what they should be taught, ‘creative curriculum’ lets them have ownership of their learning.

By having the ability to choose subject areas, it allows them to develop their skills in numeracy and literacy in relevant context.

For example, whilst working in the Monopoly project, the children developed their numeracy skills whilst learning about how mortgages work.

There was much more to share, so why not listen to the interview to hear more of how the project developed. [audio:http://otw-audio.s3.amazonaws.com/eileen-eaton-monopoly-launch.mp3]
