Isle of Wight MPs both back compensation for 1950s-born women affected by pension changes

Representatives of the Solent and Isle of Wight Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) Group met last week with MPs Joe Robertson (Conservative, Isle of Wight East pictured above) and Richard Quigley (Labour, Isle of Wight West).

Simmons: We were also seeking their commitment to fair compensation
Solent WASPI‘s Coordinator, Shelagh Simmons, said,

“We welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Island’s newly elected MPs.  It was important for them to hear about the impact unfairly implemented increases to the State Pension age has had on their 1950s-born women constituents.

“We were also seeking their commitment to fair compensation following the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s report which was issued in March this year.  The report was clear that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was guilty of Maladministration and that compensation should be paid.”

Both MPs expressed their support for the WASPI Campaign.

Robertson: Delay is causing undue hardship.
Joe Robertson told the group,

“I am supportive of the campaign and urge the Government to make a speedy decision.

“Delay is causing undue hardship.”

Quigley: I will do what I can to encourage the Government
Richard Quigley assured them,

“I continue to support WASPI women and will do what I can to encourage the Government to find a speedy, acceptable solution.”

Solent WASPI welcomes the MPs’ commitment to a fair, speedy remedy.  The Island’s WASPI women – like others around the UK – have already waited too long for justice.

Simmons: The Ombudsman has placed this in Parliament’s hands
Shelagh Simmons added,

“After more than nine years’ campaigning, during which nationally more than 293,000 WASPI women have died, the Ombudsman has placed this in Parliament’s hands.

“We thank Joe Robertson and Richard Quigley for their support.  We urge them as Parliamentarians to do everything they can to bring about the fair compensation that justice demands.  Our message to the Government is – please just get on with it.”
