Isle of Wight-based photographer Vincent Dupont-Blackshaw has embarked on an ambitious creative challenge: producing 52 photographic series in a single year.
The project will see Vincent release one complete series every week throughout the year.
Drawing from new work and archives
The photographer will create some series from fresh material, whilst others will emerge from his existing archives.
He plans to revisit previously overlooked images, unfinished concepts and ideas he hadn’t yet found ways to develop.
Vincent acknowledges the project’s demands will vary considerably week to week, with some periods offering clarity whilst others will require improvisation or compromise.
Focus on persistence over perfection
The photographer emphasises the project centres on continuity rather than achieving perfection. Vincent said,
“This project isn’t about perfection. It’s about continuity.”
He recognises the year-long timeframe presents significant challenges, including potential loss of momentum and periods of self-doubt.
The photographer also notes the extended duration creates risks of repetition, though he suggests this same timeframe offers opportunities for creative evolution.
Working with what’s available
Vincent said committing to a weekly rhythm demands a particular kind of honesty from him as an artist. He said,
“You can’t wait for the perfect moment.
“You work with what you have, where you are.”
The photographer admits he doesn’t yet know which series will connect with audiences and which will pass quietly.
Sharing the creative process
Each week, Vincent will share one series, which he acknowledges may sometimes appear fully formed and at other times still developing.
He accompanies the images with writing about his process, the decisions he makes and the uncertainties he experiences.
The photographer describes his approach as staying with the work rather than simply announcing finished projects.
