Isle of Wight production company launches new history series on Sky HISTORY

An Isle of Wight production company is celebrating national TV success after its latest history series was picked up by Sky HISTORY.

Nine of Cups’ new three‑part documentary series, Secret of the Lost Grail with Alice Roberts, airs on Sky HISTORY on Tuesday 3rd February, leading the channel’s new ‘Mystery’ season.

Presented by renowned anatomist, author and broadcaster Professor Alice Roberts, the series explores the British story of the Holy Grail legend, combining folklore, archaeology and cutting‑edge science in a search for historical truth. Alice is best known for programmes including Digging for Britain, Coast and Time Team.

Island-written and produced
The series was written and produced by Ventnor‑based Rowena Amos, with Totland‑based Kevin Early as Director of Photography, and directed by Richard Topping.

The production proudly employed a number of local crew, including Island talent Angelina Grimshaw, Hanna Nixon and Gianpaolo Giancovich, further strengthening the Isle of Wight’s growing reputation as a centre for high‑quality creative production.

Opening episode features Ventnor and West Wight
The opening episode features Ventnor and the West Wight, examining the Island’s own Grail legend with local historian Joanne Thornton, and Alice chats to storyteller Holly Medland to explore how myths and legends were passed down through oral tradition.

Producer Rowena Amos said,

“I’ve always been fascinated by the Grail legends, and many people will be surprised to learn that the Isle of Wight has its own connection to the story.

“The Island has such a rich history, and we are thrilled to be able to share that with a worldwide audience.”

What to expect
Across the series, Alice investigates theories ranging from early Christianity in Britain and the story of Joseph of Arimathea, to King Arthur, the Knights Templar and the mysterious Rosslyn Chapel.

The programme also examines a strange wooden bowl discovered by Andrew Sinclair beneath the flagstones of Rosslyn Chapel in 1993, with Alice enlisting experts from Oxford University and Historic England in Portsmouth to help unlock its secrets.

Airs on Tuesday
Secret of the Lost Grail with Alice Roberts airs on Sky HISTORY on Tuesday 3rd February at 9.00pm, and will also be available to stream via HISTORY Play on Amazon, NOW, Apple TV and YouTube.
