A new literary anthology featuring work by more than 50 authors, including four Isle of Wight writers, has been published by Island-based independent publisher Lemon Jelly Press CIC.
By morning, the sea had taken it brings together poetry and short prose inspired by the sea and the evocative line that gives the collection its title.
Contributors were invited to explore what the sea might take, what it might return and the memories, myths and transformations held within coastal landscapes.
A shared line, many directions
The resulting anthology moves between the familiar and the uncanny, exploring themes including grief, belonging, escape, loss and renewal.
Each contributor begins with the same final line, but approaches it from a distinctly different perspective.
Island roots, wider reach
Four of the featured writers are Islanders, giving the anthology a strong local connection alongside contributions from authors based across the UK and beyond.
The collection was edited and produced on the Isle of Wight by Lemon Jelly Press, a community interest company committed to publishing distinctive work and creating opportunities for writers who may experience barriers within the traditional publishing industry.
Lottie Begg, founder of Lemon Jelly Press and editor of the anthology, said:
“The sea is part of everyday life on the Isle of Wight, but it never becomes ordinary. It can be comforting, unsettling, beautiful and destructive, sometimes all within the same day.
“It has been fascinating to see more than 50 writers take the same line and carry it in completely different directions. I am particularly pleased that four Island writers are represented in the collection.”
The launch
An online launch will take place on Saturday 15th August 2026, from 6pm to 7pm.
The event will feature readings from contributing authors and an opportunity to hear more about the ideas behind the collection.
