BLACKWATER:
A3020 Blackwater Hollow
(at site of former Blackwater Garage) Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 9.30am until 3.30pm on approx. one day between Wednesday 1 July and Friday 3 July 2015 for the installation of a new sign by Island Roads. CALBOURNE:
Elm Lane
will be closed from A3054 Yarmouth Road to B3401 Freshwater Road between 6.30am until 6pm on each day (Mondays to Fridays) from Monday 22 June until Wednesday 1 July 2015. The closure is for carriageway and footway repairs, resurfacing, drainage, kerbing and verge works by Island Roads. The alternative route for traffic is; A3054 Yarmouth Road and Forest Road, Gunville Road, Priory Road,B3401 High Street (Carisbrooke), Calbourne Road and Sun Hill.

Freshwater Road (outside Calbourne Mill). Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 9.30am until 3.30pm on approx. one day or two days between Wednesday 8 July and Friday 10 July 2015 for drainage works by Island Roads. COWES:
Park Road
junction with Victoria Road Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 9am on Monday 29 June until approx. 4.30pm on Friday 3 July 2015 for the installation of a new gas connection in Victoria Road by Southern Gas Networks. EAST COWES:
Esplanade
will be closed from 2.30pm on Friday 25 April 2014 for the foreseeable future between 375 metres to the northeast of Cambridge Road and the end of the highway 860 metres to the northeast of Cambridge Road. There is no alternative route for traffic. This closure is necessary to avoid danger to persons or other traffic using the road due to a landslip. A3055 Afton Road

LAKE:
Ranalagh Road / Cliff Road / Cliff Path.
From 1200hrs on Friday 18 July 2014 for the foreseeable future the following roads / path will be closed to vehicular traffic: Cliff Road / Cliff Path will be closed from point 55 metres to the northwest of the junction with Ranalagh Road to point 185 metres to the south west of the junction with Cliff Gardens (the southern boundary of number 6). Ranalagh Road will also be closed from Cliff Road to a point 10 metres to the west of Cliff Road. During the period of closure there is no alternative route for vehicles. MERSTONE:
Merstone Lane

NEWPORT:
Mill Street
will be closed from 9am on Monday 30 March until approx. 6pm on Friday 3 July 2015 between Old Westminster Lane and the end of the highway 35 metres to the Northwest. The closure is necessary for highway development works including the construction of a new junction onto Foxes Road by Aeropark Developments for Barrett Homes. There is no diversion route for traffic, however vehicular access will be maintained as far as possible.

A3054 Fairlee Road (outside 208) Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 7.30pm until 11pm on Wednesday 1 July or Thursday 2 July 2015 for manhole cover works by Island Roads. Public Footpath N120 will be closed to pedestrians from 6am on Friday 6 March until 6am on Sunday 6 September 2015 between; A point 474 metres north to a point 516 metres north of the northern boundary of Seaclose Recreation Ground and a point 585 metres north to a point 607 metres north of the northern boundary of Seaclose Recreation Ground.
The diversion route for pedestrians is through adjacent woodland at each location. Local path closures are required in the interests of pedestrian safety whilst footbridges are closed at the Footbridge B319 at South Fairlee Farm and the Footbridge B318 at The Roundhouse. NITON:
Old Blackgang Road
will be closed from 6.30am until 6pm on each day between Tuesday 30 June and approx. Tuesday 7 July 2015 from Sandrock Road to the end of the highway. The closure is for carriageway and footway repairs, resurfacing, drainage, kerbing and verge works by Island Roads. There is no alternative route for traffic. PORCHFIELD:
Rolls Hill Road
(outside 208). Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 9.30am until 3.30pm on approx. one day or two days between Wednesday 1 July and Friday 3 July 2015 for kerbing works by Island Roads. RYDE:
Smallbrook Lane
will be closed from 6.30pm until 6am on each night (Mondays to Fridays) between Thursday 25 June and Thursday 2 July 2015 from Great Preston Road to Smallbrook Roundabout. The closure is necessary for carriageway resurfacing works by Island Roads. The alternative route will be: Great Preston Road, Alexandra Road, B3330 St Johns Hill and St Johns Road, Green Street, West Street, Swanmore Road and Ashey Road. The Strand will be closed between East Street and West Hill Road from 9am on Friday 21 November 2014 until Friday 21 August 2015. The closure is for a Sewer Flood Alleviation Scheme to upsize the existing sewer pipeline. The diversion route will be; West Street, Dover Street and Esplanade. Works are due to start near to the junction with West Hill Road. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation when necessary from Monday 17 November 2014 until the end of the scheme. Simeon Street will be closed from 9am on Monday 9 March until 4pm on Friday 25 September 2015 between The Strand and Monkton Street. The diversion route will be: The Strand and Monkton Street. The closure is for a sewer flood alleviation scheme to upsize a sewer pipeline. Access to premises and businesses will be maintained from one end of the road as far as possible during the works. Monkton Street will be closed from 9am on Wednesday 20 May until 4pm on Friday 7 August 2015 between The Strand and Simeon Street. Note these are revised closure dates. The diversion route will be: The Monkton Street, East Street and The Strand. The closure is for a sewer flood alleviation scheme to upsize a sewer pipeline. Access to premises and businesses will be maintained from one end of the road as far as possible during the works. SHANKLIN:
Cliff Path
will be closed from 9.30am on Monday 20 January 2014 for the foreseeable future to pedestrians from Skew Bridge Path to Winchester House Car Park. The closure is required due to erosion/ land movement. During the period of closure the alternative route for pedestrians will be; Skew Bridge Path, A3055 Sandown Road and Winchester House Car Park. Bonchurch Road / Cowleaze Hill, Shanklin will be closed from 6.30pm until 6am on each night (Mondays to Fridays) between Friday 3 July and Monday 13 July 2015 from Luccombe Chine House Access Road, to Church Road. The closure is for carriageway and footway repairs, resurfacing, drainage, kerbing and verge works by Island Roads. The alternative route for traffic is A3055 Leeson Road, B3327 St Boniface Road, Mitchell Avenue, Ocean View Road, Newport Road, Clarence Road, High Street and St Johns Road, A3020 Godshill Road and Victoria Avenue, A3055 High Street and Church Road. ST LAWRENCE:
A3055 Undercliff Drive
will remain closed from St Catherine’s Road to Seven Sisters Road (Western Junction), between Barrington Lodge, near to the western junction with Seven Sisters Road and Mirables which is located about a mile towards Niton. Following significant ground movement in the area in early February 2014, Undercliff Drive has been physically closed between Mirables (in the west) and a point 560 metres to the West of Seven Sisters Road (in the east) for safety reasons. There is now no access for vehicles or pedestrians. A formal road and footpath closure will be in operation for the foreseeable future. Access to businesses and attractions in Undercliff Drive will be maintained.
During the period of closure the alternative route for traffic will be;
Pedestrians; A3055 Undercliff Drive, Public Footpath V81, V77, NT28, NT29, NT30 and A3055 Undercliff Drive. Cyclists and Equestrians; A3055 Undercliff Drive, Seven Sisters Road, St Lawrence Shute, Whitwell Road, Ventnor Road, High Street (Whitwell), Kemming Road, Chatfield Road, Rectory Road, High Street (Niton), Institute Hill, Barrack Shute and A3055 Undercliff Drive. TOTLAND:
Weston Lane
(outside Merivale). Longdown Steps Public Footpath V102
will be closed from 10am on Monday 12 May 2014 for the foreseeable future between South Street and St Catherine’s Street. This closure is necessary to avoid danger to persons using the footpath until wall repair works have been undertaken. The diversion route for pedestrians will be; South Street, West Street, High Street, Victoria Street, Wheelers Bay Road and St Catherine’s Street. Castle Road (between Zig Zag Road and Gills Cliff Road)

Sometimes we are torn on a decision and really don’t want to vote either for or against. Whilst some councillors will make a habit of abstaining, or even not voting at all (to avoid any negative press perhaps!) most usually do vote one way or the other. I think it would be dangerous to remove the ability to abstain and force decisions which councillors are no comfortable… Read more »

The motion has serious issues that made it rather pointless beyond a political statement. Very worrying when one Councillor asked if we can just change the 30mph signs to 20mph signs as they get renewed. There is no understanding of policy and legal requirements. In reality it is a decision for the Executive as there are likely to be fairly hefty budget implications. Not a cheap process… Read more »

You seem to be confusing 20mph zones and 20mph limits. Or at least using the terms interchangeably.

Legally they are the same. So yes, I’m using interchangeably because they are enforced the same.

Based on cost I would expect limits to be introduced, rather than zones. However, zones would reduce the incidence (and requirement to monitor) speeding. They also inconvenience emergency vehicles.

DaveIOW a potential lack of enforcement is what my residents have expressed as a concern for the effectiveness of any changes. Certainly not all are even in favour of speed restrictions. On the other hand, not only did the conservative group vote in a whipped manner but their unholy alliance with IMG also ensured that they also acted in a whipped manner.

This type of political grouping does not serve our Island well at all….

I’m skeptical of what Devolution can offer. Mostly because I don’t trust the government and their motives, which is to reduce the deficit. I’m not strongly in favour but if the government says it’s the only way that we will get additional funding then I’m going to support negotiations until a final deal is put on the table so that I can make a fully informed decision.… Read more »

It was refreshing to see that most who voted no to the Combined Authority did so taking on the views of those who elected them. Speaking their mind on the very valid reasons for voting no. The consultation yielded a very poor response rate with many comments that were echoed this evening by Councillors. We are not capable as an Island of ‘sorting out our own problems’ when the issue is not enough money to pay for statutory services. The government continues to cut our funding with the intention of cutting it completely. Without devoted powers we cannot increase our income to even attempt to bridge the gap.

Matt Price seems not to recall his own question. I think that a transcript of the meeting is required. However, my recollection is this (as has been stated by myself and others):

“Why can’t Island Roads just change the signs from a 30mph to a 20mph?”

It is that question which is causing the issue.

However ‘ridiculous’ Matt Price thinks it is, Jonathan (and other Exec members) are very good at ensuring we have access to the facts here, and keep on the rails of reality.

We also get a good idea of the characters of councillors when they post on here, which is useful.

We have never seen IR maintaining the current 30mph signs.

It’s not the cost of the sign which is the issue. It’s the lengthy legal process that has to be followed in order to change it.

The question is, why is there a lengthy legal process? Is it just a council process and the way it’s always been done, so could be changed? Is it something enforced on us by the government? Or is it another unfortunate consequence of the PFI contract that the previous administration left us with?

Part of the problem is that the Council no longer has a Highways department. The Conservatives passed this over to Island Roads and got rid of all our in-house staff. Which means we can do nothing without the co-operation of Island Roads and they charge for every new change. If it’s too difficult or time consuming it’s entirely unreasonable of the electorate to expect those who volunteered to become Councillors to bother with it.

Luisa Hillard has a point. The legal process in order to introduce these changes will surely be lengthy and expensive, one assumes surveys will need to be undertaken etc? I believe Cllr Peacey Wilcox has been trying for years to get a Stop Sign erected at a black spot in Cowes (think it’s Mill Hill Rd?) without any success despite numerous accidents so I don’t think reducing… Read more »

I would like to thank all the councillors contributing in this thread; it has been a most enjoyable read. I must make an effort to come to the next council meeting, it sounds like fun, although Ms. Hofton often seems to think not.
