Taking on the challenge of a lifetime, six Island men are aiming to row 50 nautical miles around the Isle of Wight in less than eight hours, to bring home the record and raise valuable funds for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
The Isle of Wight based Row for Life team are aiming to smash the current record of 7hrs 56min held by mainlanders from Langstone Rowing Club, on Friday 31st May 2013, the day before thousands of people set sail for the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.
A tough Challenge
The Round the Island Row is a tough Challenge – the distance is two and half times the English Channel. With its own risks of rough water, rip tides, shoals and rocky outcrops.
Taking to the water in a 6 oar Adventure Gig, the team has a varying level of water-based rowing experience, from novice to experienced racing crew, but with only 3 short months before the big day the team will have their work cut out for themselves to get everyone up to par. However a challenge is what these guys live for having completed a 1 million metre row on Ergo rowing machines in 2011, to break the British record.
Lead from the front
Island Chiropractor Martin Scotcher explained his reason for taking on the challenge, “As a health care professional, I spend an awful lot of time trying to get my patients to take responsibility for their own fitness. I believe that this battle becomes easier and more convincing if we lead from the front.”
The row will raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust an Isle of Wight based charity that gives young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person’s primary cancer care unit in the UK, taking young people aged between 8-24 who are recovering from cancer and other serious illnesses on four-day sailing trips.
